Multi-wavelength Surveys for Distant Clusters

چکیده
Given the importance of clusters to the fields of cosmology and galaxy evolution, it is critical to understand how the cluster detection process affects (biases) ones scientific conclusions derived from a given cluster sample. I review the astrophysics, algorithms, and observational constraints that must be considered when attempting to assess cluster selection biases and their impact on the scientific constraints derived from multi-wavelength cluster surveys. In particular, one can more accurately quantify and understand the selection biases and assess cluster evolution when using joint optical/NIR/x-ray surveys than can be achieved when employing any single cluster survey.

ASCA observations of massive medium - distant clusters of galaxies
ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS ASCA observations of massive medium-distant clusters of galaxies. II. Abstract. We have selected seven medium-distant clusters of galaxies (z ∼ 0.1 − 0.3) for multi-wavelength observations with the goal of investigating their dynamical state. Following Paper I (Pierre et al. 1999) which reported the ASCA results about two of them, we present here the analysis of the A...
متن کاملStar Formation Histories and Stellar Mass Growth out to
The deepest multi-wavelength surveys now provide measurements of star formation in galaxies out to z > 1, and allow to reconstruct its history for large parts of the galaxy population. I review recent studies, which have consistently revealed a picture where galaxy star formation rates and their evolution are primarily determined by galaxy mass. Unless they undergo a quenching of their star for...
متن کاملThe Space Density and Colors of Massive Galaxies at 2 < Z < 3: the Predominance of Distant Red Galaxies
Using the deep multi-wavelength MUSYC, GOODS, and FIRES surveys we construct a stellar mass-limited sample of galaxies at 2 < z < 3. The sample comprises 294 galaxies with M > 1011 M⊙ distributed over four independent fields with a total area of almost 400 arcmin2. The mean number density of massive galaxies in this redshift range ρ(M > 1011 M⊙) = (2.2±0.6)×10−4 h70 Mpc −3. We present median va...
متن کاملX-ray Surveys of Distant Galaxy Clusters
I review recent observational progress in the search for and study of distant galaxy clusters in the X-ray band, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the abundance of X-ray clusters out to z ∼1. Several on-going deep X-ray surveys have led to the discovery of a sizeable population of clusters at z > 0.5 and have the sensitivity to detect clusters beyond redshift one. These surveys have ...
متن کاملA Richness Study of 14 Distant X - ray Clusters From the 160 Square Degree Survey
We have measured the surface density of galaxies toward 14 X-ray-selected cluster candidates at redshifts z > ∼ 0.46, and we show that they are associated with rich galaxy concentrations. These clusters, having X-ray luminosities between L x (0.5 − 2) ∼ 0.5 − 2.6 × 10 44 ergs s −1 , are among the most distant and luminous in our 160 square degree ROSAT PSPC cluster survey. We find that the clus...
